VICKI'S BIO
History of a fashion legacyThe Beginning
Vicki Soble was introduced to knitting by her Grandma’s Anna & Molly when she was only six years old. This experience would mold her life in the future. Born in Chicago, and raised in Baltimore, Vicki was exposed to the fashion world from the very beginning. Her parents owned a chain of five upscale women’s boutiques in Baltimore, so it was only natural that she aspire to, one day, have her own boutique.
1960’s
In 1963, as the young mother of a 4 year old little boy, the entrepreneurial path to her goal began when she opened her first small business. The Poodle Pub of Pikesville was the premier dog grooming salon in all of Baltimore. Having no experience, Vicki taught herself the intricate art of grooming by practicing at home on her own six Miniature Poodles. She went on to become an accomplished groomer, and a successful business woman. The business thrived. People came from miles around to the first and for a while, the only dog grooming shop in Baltimore. Visiting celebrities such as Liberace, Eartha Kitt & Gloria Dehaven brought their dogs to her when they were in town. The legendary Johnny Unitas, was one of many local sports heroes who were clients.
1970’s
In 1974, Vicki’s dream of having her own fashion boutique was realized when she relocated the Poodle Pub and opened The Spare Room Boutique. Not your run-of-the-Mill women’s clothing shop, but one situated within the confines of the new grooming salon. Upon entering the parlor, you would see the pooches being groomed behind a glass partition. A few steps beyond and you would enter a world of fine fashion. It was a natural fit. Women would shop for themselves while their four-legged loved ones were being pampered in the room next door. Vicki’s dream had come true & she was dressing Baltimore’s most fashionable women in the finest apparel designed by the most famous designers in the world.
1980’s
Over the years, she’d knit the occasional sweater for her son, Mitch, but it was only a matter of time before her true passion took hold, when in 1982, Vicki started selling yarns and teaching knitting, as well as, designing and selling her own original creations in the boutique. What followed would change her life forever, and steer her in a whole new direction. One day, someone suggested that she try to sell wholesale to national market. She did and it was an instant sensation! Her first two orders were from Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. Subsequent orders from smaller shops around the country were quick to follow. She even received international orders from as far away as South America & Japan. This new venture would take her in a direction that she’d never even conceived. In 1983, Vicki opened her own showroom, on the famed, Fashion Avenue in New York City. Her signature collection, of hand-beaded Antique French Lace trimmed Angora knit evening Sweaters, was easily recognizable and ultimately, caught the attention of buyers in boutiques and specialty stores from Rodeo Drive to Worth Ave. By 1987, her designs were being sold in Saks Fifth Avenue’s illustrious Holiday Catalogue and displayed in their renowned Holiday Season windows on the Avenue. Vicki had reached a substantial milestone.
1990’s & Today
In the early 90’s, Vicki began designing matching lace skirts and silk pants to coordinate with the knits. She was taking a turn in a whole new direction as the natural evolution of her eveningwear collection was beginning to take shape. By the end of the decade, she was designing dresses, gowns, suits and ensembles to a growing list of private clientele. The Vicki Soble Couture Collection was born. In 2004, Vicki moved to Florida and opened a small boutique in Boca Raton to compliment the New York operation. Commuting between NYC & Boca, she could now meet with her clients in either location, at their convenience. In 2008 she relocated the shop to a larger more visible location on Plaza Real South in a new section of Royal Palm Place. It was the culmination of an evolution gone full circle. This time around, though, Vicki is dressing the World’s most fashionable women in her very own creations, exclusively!
